12 hour (2 day) course valid for 3 years

This course is ideal for requalification of the 3 day First aid at work course for higher or advanced level hazards (e.g. construction, manufacturing or chemical plants) or where your needs assessment identifies a requirement to provide additional training, covering a broad syllabus including the recognition and treatment of a wider range of conditions.

Qualification

First aid at work certificate;

HSE compliant under the Health and Safety (First-aid) Regulations 1981. Taught in accordance with current guidelines on adult basic life support published by the Resuscitation Council (UK), and for other aspects of first aid, in accordance with current guidelines published by the Voluntary Aid Societies and other published guidelines that are supported by a responsible body of medical opinion. The training and assessment will be delivered in accordance with currently accepted standards for first-aid practice and follow the skills for health assessment principles for first aid qualifications. This also meets the requirements of your own needs assessment.

Course Content

The HSE guidelines set out a syllabus for first aid at work

In addition to the topics covered on an emergency first aid at work course, on completion of training, successful candidates will be able to:

  1. administer first aid to a casualty with:
    injuries to bones, muscles and joints, including suspected spinal injuries
    chest injuries
    eye injuries
    sudden poisoning
    anaphylactic shock
  1. recognise the presence of major illnesses and provide appropriate first aid (including heart attack, stroke, epilepsy, asthma, diabetes).

This course now includes a practical, automated external defibrillator (AED) training session using trainer AEDs.

ASSESSMENT

This will be by ongoing assessment with both theory and practical sessions and confirmation through knowledge checks to ensure all learning outcomes are met to the required standard.

Pre-requisites

Must hold a valid First aid at work certificate and produce this at the start of the course (There can be a 28 day grace after the certificate has expired)
Selected HSE first aiders should physically able to perform the relevant actions and techniques included in the syllabus. Reasonable adjustments can be made for disabilities contact VTS.
This course requires close contact with other delegates and first aid manikins and contains videos and images of injuries appropriate to the subject.
